Victor Osimhen broke through the barriers to set a new record, becoming the top Nigerian scorer in UEFA Champions League history while Galatasaray barely got by with a 1-0 victory at Rams Park against Liverpool.

After Dominik Szoboszlai’s foul on Barıs Alper Yılmaz inside the box, the 25-year-old striker fired off the spot kick in the 16th minute. Osimhen looking directly at the goalkeeper Alisson Becker, released his shot straight down the middle to mark the occasion of his 10th goal in the competition proper, jumping over the nine goals of Obafemi Martins he set as the new record.

Galatasaray who were heavily defeated 5-1 by Eintracht Frankfurt in their opening game of the group, resisted stubbornly despite Liverpool’s pressure and secured an important subsequent victory. This result rekindled the Turkish champions’ spirits while sending a negative message to the subscribers of the Premier League holders’ campaign.

After the match, Osimhen showed delight with his achievement and declared that Liverpool’s challenge was good. “We were up to the mark against one of the world’s top clubs, and I am extremely happy about that. It is a big step for us and a great source of motivation,” he told CBS Sports.

Galatasaray has a date with Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt on October 22, while Liverpool head to Germany to face Eintracht Frankfurt.
