America’s 4-1 demolition of Paraguay in their opening game saw them set a new record of being their biggest ever World Cup victory since 1930, just as Pochettino would have wanted.
A three-goal margin win over Paraguay and a haul of four goals is something that has not been witnessed at a World Cup, let alone against Paraguay, since the very first World Cup in 1930.
Pochettino’s United States team, whom he managed from the end of 2024 after leaving Chelsea, looked lively and attacking with high pressing and quick transitions throughout.
The first player responsible for the dominant performance was ex-Chelsea player Christian Pulisic, who, despite worrying himself with a knock (which caused Pochettino to substitute him), made a telling impact.

The former Chelsea man recorded an assist, successful dribbles, seven won duels out of ten, and, with all the pressure on the Paraguay defense and chances created, was rated America’s highest performer by FotMob with a 7.9.
Pochettino later hailed the amazing crowd atmosphere with words about how popular the game is and what a great tournament this promises to be.
If America can carry their dominant performance through their remaining group stages, then they will fancy their chances against Australia; however, Pochettino will surely hope that Pulisic’s knock doesn’t develop into anything more.
