The National Parents-Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) has called for the imposition of severe penalties on individuals responsible for school building collapses in the country. This call comes in response to the recent collapse of a school building in Jos, Plateau state, which resulted in the loss of 22 lives and injured 132 others.
NAPTAN President, Haruna Danjuma, expressed shock and sadness over the incident, emphasizing the need for government involvement in the construction of learning facilities. He stressed the importance of ensuring due diligence before approving school construction projects.
Danjuma questioned the approval process granted to school proprietors, highlighting the need for relevant agencies to enforce existing laws and regulations. He urged all agencies responsible for authorizing school construction to take their mandate seriously and ensure compliance with standards.
The association’s call for stricter penalties aims to prevent such tragedies in the future and ensure the safety of students and teachers in Nigerian schools.
