In a joint operation, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Imo State Police Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, has successfully raided a notorious Eastern Security Network (ESN) and Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) camp in Ezioha forest, located in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State. The raid led to the rescue of multiple kidnapping victims, including a 69-year-old traditional ruler from Umuorji Mgbidi community in Oru West Local Government Area.

Kidnap Kingpin Neutralized in Gun Battle

According to Henry Okoye, the Command Public Relations Officer, the raid was met with fierce resistance as the security operatives engaged in a heavy gun battle with the gang members upon arrival at the camp. During the exchange, the leader of the kidnapping ring, who had been terrorizing the state for some time, was neutralized. Other members of the gang managed to flee the scene, some with gunshot wounds.

Rescue of Kidnap Victims

The raid was a significant success for the security forces, as they rescued a couple and several other kidnap victims held hostage by the criminal group. Among the rescued victims was the 69-year-old traditional ruler, whose abduction had heightened tensions in his community.

Weapons and Items Recovered

In addition to rescuing the victims, the security operatives recovered several items from the camp. These included multiple vehicles, a pump-action gun, 10 live cartridges, four locally made explosives, a Biafra flag, and a native bulletproof vest. The cache of weapons and explosives highlights the dangerous nature of the group and the threat they posed to public safety in the region.

Conclusion

This successful operation marks another victory in the fight against kidnapping and criminal activities in Imo State. The neutralization of the gang leader and the rescue of the hostages underscore the determination of the state’s security agencies to combat violent crime and restore peace in the region. However, with some of the gang members escaping, authorities are continuing their efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects and ensure the safety of the public.
