Fresh out of jail, opposition leader Bassirou Diomaye Faye wasted no time rallying supporters in his first public appearance as a presidential candidate.
Just a day after his release, hundreds gathered to hear his promises to fight corruption in the upcoming March 24th election.
Standing beside Faye was the popular firebrand Ousmane Sonko, also recently released from prison. While barred from running himself due to what he calls trumped-up charges, Sonko threw his full weight behind his ally. “This election is ours for the taking,” Sonko declared at a joint press conference. “We can’t afford to waste another minute.”
Sonko was widely seen as the main challenger to President Macky Sall’s party. Now, disqualified, he hopes his supporters will back Faye. This could be a game-changer, as Sonko enjoys strong support among young people tired of unemployment and economic woes.

Faye: Sonko’s Shadow Candidate
Faye’s campaign is all about channeling Sonko’s popularity. Posters plaster the streets with the slogan “Diomaye is Sonko,” blurring the lines between the two men. Even prominent figures like ex-Prime Minister Aminata Toure, who fell out with Sall, have joined the Faye camp.
“Sall practically handed the opposition its best weapon,” Toure remarked, praising Faye’s clean image.
Tax Inspectors Turned Politicians
Both Faye and Sonko hail from humble beginnings. Law school classmates and former tax inspectors, they bonded over their fight against corruption within the system. Analysts describe them as “incorruptible,” a stark contrast to what they see as a culture of self-enrichment.
Fresh Faces, Fresh Ideas, But Will They Stick?
Faye promises a complete political shake-up. His proposals, however, raise eyebrows among some. Plans for a new national currency and renegotiating resource contracts could unsettle foreign investors as Senegal prepares to launch major oil and gas production.
Only time will tell if Faye’s clean image and Sonko’s backing are enough to overcome Sall’s party. One thing’s for sure: Senegal’s upcoming election promises to be a thrilling contest.
