South Korean prosecutors are now seeking the arrest of former president Yoon Suk Yeol. They filed a formal request on Sunday after questioning him twice, including one session that lasted more than nine hours.

Yoon was removed from office in April. This came after lawmakers impeached and suspended him for attempting to undermine civilian rule. He had ordered armed soldiers into parliament during a tense session on December 3.

Prosecutor Park Ji-young confirmed that the special counsel has filed a request for a detention warrant at the Seoul Central District Court. She said Yoon is facing charges of abuse of power and obstruction of official duties.

Park further revealed that Yoon is also accused of falsifying official documents related to his martial law order. She explained that the warrant explains why detention is needed, but refused to share full details.

Yoon’s legal troubles deepened after he was questioned on Saturday. He was grilled over his alleged resistance during a failed arrest attempt in January. He was also asked about accusations that he approved drone flights into Pyongyang to justify declaring martial law.

His legal team has rejected the charges. They described the new warrant as “excessive and unwarranted.”

In their words, “We have thoroughly refuted the allegations and demonstrated that, as a matter of law, no crime can be established.” They also claimed the special counsel had failed to present any clear evidence.

This latest attempt to arrest Yoon comes just a week after a court dismissed a similar warrant. The earlier request was denied after Yoon initially refused to cooperate with investigators. However, he later agreed to attend future questioning sessions.

Despite this, prosecutors remain determined to pursue his detention. They insist that Yoon’s actions during his presidency, especially around the martial law issue, require urgent accountability.

The legal fight around Yoon Suk Yeol has now intensified, as South Korea seeks arrest of Yoon Suk Yeol over abuse of power and martial law orders.
