Iga Swiatek was one of the most dominant players of all time at Wimbledon to overwhelm Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 in only 58 minutes and grab her first Wimbledon crown on Saturday.
The Polish athlete achieved the first double bagel in a Wimbledon ladies’ final since 1911 by completely dismantling the American number 13 seed who was making her debut in a Grand Slam final. Swiatek, that is five-times major winner, will be the second player in the Open era who has won a Slam final without losing a game after Steffi Graf’s performance at the 1988 French Open.
“This is really unbelievable,” admitted Swiatek. “I never even thought about winning here — it seemed too far away.”
In her journey to Sen Kari’s eighth major title, Swiatek dropped only one set, showing great confidence on a surface she never had a good relationship with. Her victory also makes her the first Polish player to win the Wimbledon singles title in the Open era.
Anisimova, who had beaten world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals in a big upset, struggled on Centre Court by making 28 unforced errors. Although the crowd was behind her and she briefly raised her level in the second set, she was unable to find the solution to Swiatek’s continuous good form.
Swiatek becomes now the eighth consecutive first-time female champion at Wimbledon since 2016.
