Top seed Iga Swiatek took a major stride towards securing her third straight French Open title by convincingly defeating American third seed Coco Gauff 6-2, 6-4 in Thursday’s semi-final.
This victory at Roland Garros marks Swiatek’s 20th consecutive win on clay and her 11th triumph over Gauff in their 12 encounters.
In a match defined by Swiatek’s unwavering consistency and tactical precision, she broke Gauff’s serve in the opening game, setting the tone for the rest of the contest. Despite Gauff’s aggressive play and efforts to fight back, the 23-year-old Pole held firm, repelling break points in her next two service games and tightening her grip on the match.
Gauff, visibly emotional after losing the first set and frustrated by a controversial line call in the second, briefly rallied to break Swiatek’s serve for the first time. However, Swiatek immediately responded with a break of her own, and then surged to a 4-3 lead with a decisive winner, showcasing her dominance on the slow clay surface of Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Swiatek’s victory was sealed on her serve, equalling her personal best 18-match winning streak on clay from last year’s Stuttgart to Warsaw stretch. Reflecting on her performance, Swiatek emphasized the importance of adapting to the unique pressures of Grand Slam tennis and noted her improvement since narrowly escaping defeat against former world number one Naomi Osaka in the second round.
“For sure, something changed,” Swiatek said. “I adjusted better to the court. It’s not easy to play the first matches at a Grand Slam because the atmosphere is different than other tournaments.”
As she prepares for the final against either 12th seed Jasmine Paolini or rising star Mirra Andreeva, Swiatek remains the clear favorite to lift the trophy once again. Her blend of mental fortitude and tactical acumen has made her a formidable force at Roland Garros, and she will aim to extend her clay dominance further in the weekend showdown.
