Brentford moved out of the Premier League relegation zone with a dominant 3-1 win over Manchester United, with their away winless streak extending to eight league games.
In fact, it turned out to be a dream start for the Bees at the Gtech Community Stadium, as they made their breakthrough in less than eight minutes. After a well-measured long ball from Jordan Henderson, Thiago Igor took the ball with great composure and let the ball go by the diving goalkeeper Altay Bayındır. Twelve minutes later the Brazilian striker made it 2-0 to Brentford, the fastest reaction to the rebound after Altay Bayındır blocked Kevin Schade’s shot being the correct one to complete the goal.
As it turns out, they had only won three times in their last 24 league trips to London, nevertheless, the Red Devils responded with a highly encouraging goal. Just before the break, Benjamin Šeško took advantage of a rebound opportunity to score his first-ever goal for the club, thus halving the deficit.
The second half, Ruben Amorim’s men attempted to level the score, with Bruno Fernandes missing their best chance to do so from the penalty spot. His shot was blocked by Caoimhín Kelleher, who kept his cool to deny the United skipper his second missed penalty of the season.
Deep into the stoppage time, Brentford wrapped the victory when Mathias Jensen found the bottom corner with a sublime curling effort. The victory injects a lot of positive energy into Keith Andrews’ squad, while the dreadful away form of United keeps planting seeds of anxiety in Amorim’s mind.
