Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, has been identified by the FBI as the suspect in the attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The incident, which unfolded with shots fired towards the stage where Trump was speaking, ended swiftly as Crooks was fatally shot by Secret Service agents.
Authorities are scrambling to unravel the motive behind the attack, which claimed the life of one rally attendee and left two others critically wounded, including Trump, who suffered a gunshot wound to the ear.
Public records indicate Crooks was a registered Republican, set to cast his first vote in a presidential election this coming November. His residence, an hour away from the rally site in Butler, was subject to heightened security measures by the Federal Aviation Administration following the incident.
At age 17, Crooks donated $15 to ActBlue, a PAC supporting left-leaning and Democratic causes, although the Progressive Turnout Project, the intended recipient, has yet to comment on the matter.
Crooks’ father, Matthew Crooks, expressed shock and stated he would await law enforcement’s findings before making further statements.
Thomas Crooks, a 2022 graduate of Bethel Park High School, had received accolades for academic achievement, including a $500 award from the National Math and Science Initiative. Video footage from his graduation ceremony has circulated, though its authenticity remains unverified by Reuters.
Law enforcement, lacking identification on-site, utilized alternative methods to confirm Crooks’ identity. FBI officials are conducting a thorough investigation, including DNA and biometric analysis.
As law enforcement secured the perimeter of Crooks’ residence, local residents expressed disbelief at the events. Meanwhile, social media channels associated with Crooks have yet to be identified, prompting questions about potential content removal by Meta, parent company of Facebook and Instagram.
