Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed Kyiv’s surprise offensive into Russia’s Kursk region, marking the most significant incursion since the war began. Zelenskyy justified the attack as a means to “restore justice” and apply pressure on Moscow.
The ongoing battle, entering its sixth day, has prompted a strong Russian response. Moscow has initiated evacuations, imposed heightened security measures in border regions, and deployed additional troops with Belarus.
In his nightly address, Zelenskyy mentioned discussing the operation with Ukrainian Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi tagging the attack to be Ukraine’s determination to retaliate for Russia’s 2022 invasion. He highlighted the operation’s strategic importance in forcing Russia onto the defensive.
“Today, I received several reports from Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi regarding the front lines and our actions to push the war onto the aggressor’s territory,” Zelenskiy said. “Ukraine is proving that it can indeed restore justice and is applying the necessary pressure on the aggressor.”
On Sunday, Russia’s defense ministry reported the destruction of 14 Ukrainian drones and four Tochka-U tactical ballistic missiles over Kursk, and 18 drones over other Russian regions.
However, Despite Russian claims of repelling the attack, Ukrainian forces have managed to penetrate several kilometers into Russian territory. Even though, Russia controls over 100,000 square kilometers of Ukraine’s internationally recognized land. Military analysts suggest the incursion caught Moscow off guard, exposing vulnerabilities in Russia’s border defenses.
The conflict has led to civilian casualties, with at least 13 people injured in Kursk due to falling missile debris. The humanitarian crisis is deepening, as thousands of residents are being evacuated from border areas.
The international community is closely monitoring the situation. Zelenskyy has appealed to Western allies for increased military support, including long-range weapons to deter future Russian aggression.
The Kremlin has condemned the incursion as “barbaric” and requested the United Nations to condemn Ukraine’s actions. As the conflict intensifies, fears of a further escalation and potential regional instability grow.
