The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has said he regrets last Friday’s clash with President Trump at the white house. Zelenskiy says that despite the disagreement. Ukraine remains committed to peace and is determined to end the ongoing war with Russia under conditions that ensure lasting stability.
Ukraine’s Commitment to Peace
In a statement shared on his 𝕏 handle on Tuesday, Zelenskyy reaffirmed Ukraine’s readiness to negotiate an end to the war. However, he stressed that peace must come with meaningful commitments from Russia. He urged Russia to release prisoners of war and halt missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.
“I would like to reiterate Ukraine’s commitment to peace. None of us wants an endless war,” Zelenskyy stated. “Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than Ukrainians.”
He also expressed confidence that President Trump’s leadership could help bring about a resolution to the war, which has led to immense loss of life and destruction.
Key Steps Toward Ending the War
Outlining his vision for a peace process, Zelenskyy proposed initial steps such as a ceasefire on missile and drone attacks, an end to bombings on civilian infrastructure, and a truce at sea—provided Russia reciprocates.
“We are ready to work fast to end the war, and the first stages could be the release of prisoners and a truce in the sky—banning missiles, long-range drones, and bombs on energy and other civilian infrastructure. A truce in the sea should also happen immediately if Russia does the same. Then, we want to move very fast through all the next stages and work with the U.S. to agree on a strong final deal,” he stated.
Ukraine’s Readiness to Strengthen U.S. Ties
Zelenskyy also addressed the abandoned minerals deal, which was expected to be signed during last Friday’s contentious Oval Office meeting. Despite the discord, he expressed willingness to finalize the agreement, seeing it as a crucial step toward enhanced security and economic cooperation.
He praised the United States for its ongoing support, particularly recalling Trump’s past decision to provide Ukraine with Javelin anti-tank missiles.
“We do value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence. We remember the moment when things changed—when President Trump provided Ukraine with Javelins. We are grateful for this,” he said.
Acknowledging the difficulties in their recent meeting, Zelenskyy expressed hope that future discussions would be more productive.
“Our meeting in Washington at the White House on Friday did not go the way it was supposed to. Regrettably, it happened this way. It is time to make things right. We would like future cooperation and communication to be constructive,” he stated.
Looking Ahead
Despite recent tensions, Zelenskyy remains optimistic about Ukraine’s relationship with the United States. He reiterated his country’s readiness to sign the minerals and security agreement at any time, emphasizing its importance for Ukraine’s long-term security.
“Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is ready to sign it at any time and in any convenient format. We see this agreement as a step toward greater security and solid security guarantees, and I truly hope it will work effectively,” he added.
As Ukraine continues to navigate the challenges of war and diplomacy, Zelenskyy’s message highlights a strong desire for peace while maintaining national sovereignty. With U.S. support and a structured approach to negotiations, he remains hopeful that a lasting resolution can be achieved.
