Matheus Cunha has said it was like a “dream come true” after receiving the No.10 shirt of Manchester United, the team of his £62.5 million transfer from Wolves, and being his old No.10 shirt.
The Brazilian striker takes over the iconic jersey, which was last worn by Marcus Rashford, who reportedly asked for a transfer and is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer. Though Rashford is still the club’s player, United announced that Cunha will have the No.10 shirt for the next season.
“It’s something that you always dream about,” Cunha said to the club’s media. “I think about Wayne Rooney when I see this number. I have watched him since when I was a kid and I’ve seen lots of his games.”
Cunha further noted that the last time when he changed shirts with Rashford after a match, he still has that shirt at home and regards it as a souvenir. He admitted that the legendary names who were given this number are the ones that keep the history alive, and that he brought some names from the past like Ruud van Nistelrooy and Zlatan Ibrahimović to the memory of the listeners while giving his speech.
“This shirt is along with it the responsibility,” he mentioned. “But I still want to do my part by scoring goals, providing assists and leading the team.”
The 26 years old midfielder, will appear for the first time representing United on July 19 in a pre-season friendly against Leeds United and he has already begun practising with his new teammates.
