In a shocking attack that has shattered the island’s sense of peace, a single, violent fugitive unleashed a smoke bomb and knife rampage across the heart of Taipei’s commercial district, killing three before jumping to his own death during a police chase. Taiwanese authorities have now confirmed the attacker, a 27-year-old man wanted for dodging military service, acted completely alone, bringing a grim end to a manhunt that began with chaos in the capital’s main train station.

The assailant, identified as Chang Wen from Taoyuan, ignited his spree on Friday evening by setting off smoke bombs at the packed Taipei Main Station. He then moved to a nearby mall and subway station, stabbing victims indiscriminately both inside the shopping center and along his route. The attack left eleven people injured, two of whom are in intensive care, before police cornered Chang Wen. He died falling from a building during the pursuit.

Authorities swiftly pieced together the chilling profile of a solitary actor. National Police Agency Director-General Chang Jung-hsin stated Saturday, “Based on relevant verification work carried out continuously since yesterday, we have not found that the suspect had any other accomplices.” Investigators are still probing the motive.

A key detail emerged late Friday: the attacker was not an unknown entity. Premier Cho Jung-tai revealed that Chang Wen was already wanted for suspected evasion of Taiwan’s compulsory military service.

Eleven people were injured in the attack, of whom two are currently in intensive care, according to the health ministry.

Meanwhile, the National Police Agency Director-General Chang Jung-hsin has informed reporters that investigations are ongoing to determine the motive of the attack.
