The Kano game of thrones continues to unfold, and it seems we’re carrying this saga straight into 2025. The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has spoken out over last week’s puzzling blockade of the Gidan Rumfa Palace by security operatives. Apparently, neither he nor the Emirate knows why the palace was sealed off, and there’s been no official explanation, just a whole lot of silence.
Addressing a delegation from Bichi on Wednesday, the Emir called the incident nothing more than a “distraction.” He assured the delegation that the blockage wouldn’t derail the Emirate’s plans, including the appointment of Munir Sanusi as the new District Head of Bichi. While he talked about the confusion surrounding the incident, he maintained that peace and continuity would prevail.
The blockade, carried out by the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), restricted access to the palace for days. However, both agencies have kept mute about their motives. Sources hint that the action might be tied to the upcoming instalment of Munir Sanusi or ongoing discussions about controversial tax reforms. Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has taken a swipe at the Federal Government, accusing security forces of overreach and stirring unnecessary drama.
Despite the chaos, the Emir reassured his audience that the stalled ceremony for Bichi’s District Head would eventually proceed, promising a new date for the event. “Another day will be fixed, and your District Head will surely be brought to you. Everything will take place peacefully,” he said, urging the people of Bichi to remain calm and prayerful.
The Emir referred to Bichi as his “second home,” sharing personal stories of how he spent significant parts of his school vacations in the town. He expressed admiration for the peace-loving and educated nature of its people. “I know nowhere more than Bichi. It’s a place of knowledge, peace, and good religious ideology,” he said, reminiscing about his late uncle and his formative years in the area.
The Bichi delegation, led by local government chairman Hamza Sule Maifata, Chief Imam Lawan Abubakar, and Elders Forum chairman Mallam Isyaka Bichi, pledged their loyalty to the Emirate. They also expressed their gratitude for the appointment of Munir Sanusi, reaffirming their readiness to welcome their new District Head with open arms.
