The U.S President-elect daughter-in-law, Lara Trump has stepped down as the co-chair of the Republican National Committee amid predictions that she might fill a possible Senate vacancy in Florida.
The politician had while announcing her resignation on social media, said, “the job I came to do is now complete”, citing the RNC’s triumph in fundraising and voter turnout.
While Trump has yet to disclose her next move, some Trump allies have lobbied for her to replace Senator Marco Rubio, the president-elect’s pick for secretary of state.
If he is confirmed as America’s top diplomat by the Senate, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis would personally pick a replacement to serve out the remainder of Rubio’s six-year term, which is to end in 2026.
Lara Trump had during an interview with the Associated Press, expressed her willingness to taking over Rubio’s seat.
In her words;
“It is something I would seriously consider. If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like.”
Lara Trump was elected as RNC co-chair in March, and was afterwards, hand-picked by her father-in-law – yet another indication of his strong grip on the Republican party.
Together with her husband, Eric, and his older brother Don Jr, Lara Trump emerged as one of the most important campaign surrogates for Donald Trump’s White House efforts this year.
Senator Rick Scott of Florida and several Republicans have publicly supported her desire to be Rubio’s replacement in the Senate.
