Argentina secured their place in the Copa América quarter-finals with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Chile at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. This victory marks Argentina’s 21st win in their last 22 internationals.

Despite Argentina’s dominance, Chile, managed by Argentinian Ricardo Gareca, held their ground impressively, keeping the match tight. Chile had more players in their starting XI currently playing in Argentina’s domestic league than the Albiceleste themselves, adding an intriguing layer to the contest.

The first significant chance of the game came in the 22nd minute when Julian Alvarez, who scored in Argentina’s opening win over Canada, had his shot comfortably saved by Chile’s veteran goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, earning his 150th cap at 41 years old.

As tensions rose, a series of physical exchanges ensued, including Gabriel Suazo’s rough challenge on Lionel Messi and a minor incident involving Rodrigo De Paul and Suazo. Argentina’s attack began to test Bravo further as the half wore on, with Messi hitting the post from 30 yards just before the break.

The second half saw Argentina ramp up the pressure. Nahuel Molina’s effort was parried away by Bravo, who then made a crucial save from Nicolas González.

However, it was Lautaro Martinez who eventually broke the deadlock in the 88th minute. After Giovani Lo Celso’s shot was saved, Martinez coolly finished the rebound, securing Argentina’s spot in the knockout stages.

With this win, Argentina remains undefeated in the group stage, while Chile must now beat Canada to avoid their first group stage exit from Copa América since 2004.
