The suspected gunman who shot two Minnesota legislators was apprehended after a 36-hour statewide manhunt involving over 200 officers. Authorities took the suspect into custody following an armed standoff at a St. Cloud motel, where he had barricaded himself with multiple weapons according to Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans.

The wounded lawmakers – State Senator John Marty and Representative Jamie Becker-Finn – underwent emergency surgery and are said to now be in stable condition. Police confirmed the attack appears politically motivated, with the suspect’s manifesto naming seven additional Democratic officials as potential targets.

Governor Tim Walz immediately ordered armed protection for all legislators and upgraded Capitol security protocols. The measures include panic buttons in offices and mandatory threat assessment training following what House Speaker Melissa Hortman called “an unprecedented attack on democracy itself.”

Court records reveal the 38-year-old suspect had previous arrests for threatening public officials and was known to anti-terrorism task forces.

As Minnesota reels from the first direct attack on sitting legislators in state history, political leaders from both parties condemned the violence while making plans on how to balance security with public access to elected officials.
