Liverpool player Mohamed Salah has criticised UEFA for being vague in their salute to the former Palestine national team player Suleiman al-Obeid, who was killed in Gaza this week.
Obeid, 41, was the “Palestinian Pele” and went to bed on Wednesday after an incident with Israeli gunfire while he was waiting for humanitarian aid in southern Gaza Strip, according to the PFA. The PFA said that the Israeli forces are responsible for the area where they targeted civilians.
UEFA wrote on X: “Goodbye Suleiman al-Obeid, the ’Palestinian Pele’ A great talent who inspired plenty of children for the future, even at the darkest of times.” Salah answered straight away: “Can you explain to us the circumstances of his death, the place, and the reasons?”
Obeid was a native of Gaza City, he had 24 appearances for Palestine national team and was happily married with five kids. The PFA says that from October 2023 when the war in Gaza started, 662 people from sports and scouting sector have been killed, 321 of whom are football related.
Last season’s Premier League top scorer, Salah, has made several appeals on occasions to the world leaders to make sure the aid reaches Gaza.
He will play for Liverpool in the Community Shield match against Crystal Palace on Sunday at Wembley.
