Moon Sighting Efforts in Nigeria

In Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Muslims across the country to observe the sky for the new moon of Shawwal 1446 AH on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

This directive was conveyed in a statement released on Friday, March 28, 2025, by the Waziri of Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu. The statement emphasized that March 29 marked the 29th day of Ramadan 1446 AH, making it the first possible day for moon sighting.

Official Announcement Pending

The Sultan advised that any individual who sights the moon should report their observations via the designated phone numbers provided. Once the moon sighting is confirmed, it will mark the beginning of Shawwal and the official end of Ramadan.

The statement also noted that the Sultanate Council would make an official announcement regarding Eid al-Fitr based on verified moon sightings.

Public Holidays Declared in Nigeria

In anticipation of the Eid celebrations, the federal government of Nigeria has declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as official public holidays. These holidays will allow Muslims across the country to observe and celebrate the end of Ramadan.

Conclusion

The confirmation of the crescent moon in Saudi Arabia signals the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid al-Fitr festivities. While Saudi Arabia has confirmed the sighting, Nigeria awaits official verification from the Sultanate Council. As Muslims worldwide prepare for this significant religious celebration, these moon sighting processes ensure a unified observance of Eid al-Fitr.
