One of Indonesia’s most senior police officers, Ferdy Sambo, was today, Monday 13 February, sentenced to death over the murder of his bodyguard.
Ferdy Sambo, a two-star general and former head of internal affairs for the national police had been a suspect after his bodyguard was found dead at Sambo’s home in July 2022, in a murder, police officials had been suspected to have been covering up.
Sambo had been accused of directing a subordinate to shoot 27-year-old Brigadier Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat and then proceeding to fire a bullet into the wounded victim himself.
Sambo had been apprehended in August 2022 and discharged from the force in September 2022, before the months-long trial was noticed by the national headlines.
Sambo has about a week to appeal the judge’s verdict.
Meanwhile, activists had remarked that Sambo’s role as a law enforcer was most probably the reason for the maximum sentencing.
