A recent graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s Quantity Surveying Department, Ifunanya Miracle, known as Bliss, tragically lost her life while escaping an unidentified prankster’s robbery on the university premises in Awka, Anambra State.
Ifunanya’s friend, Peace, a student in the Pure and Industrial Chemistry Department, was also involved in the incident and sustained various injuries. Peace was rushed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Sources indicate that Ifunanya ran a Point-of-Sale business on the university premises during her studies. On Sunday, June 9, 2024, after closing her business for the day, she and Peace boarded a tricycle to their destination.
The two students were traveling when a passenger beside them allegedly attempted to rob them. A student from the university, preferring to stay anonymous, explained that in a desperate attempt to escape, they jumped from the moving tricycle. Peace sustained injuries, while Miracle tragically hit her head on the ground.
Miracle had recently graduated and ran a Point-of-Sale business on campus. The incident occurred around 7 pm on June 9, 2024. She had just packed up her business items and stored them under a staircase in their compound. Shockingly, they soon learned of her death.
Reportedly, Miracle and her friend were on a tricycle when a passenger demanded their phones. In their attempt to escape, Miracle jumped out, hit her head, and died before reaching the hospital. Peace, who also jumped, was injured and remains in the hospital.
The school’s spokesperson, Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, confirmed the incident on Monday. He mentioned that the prankster, a final-year student, would face disciplinary actions following Miracle’s burial.
“The university is fully aware of the incident. It was not a robbery but a very expensive prank. The students were told to bring their phones but they didn’t know it was a prank. So, they jumped, one died and one survived.
“The families of the victims and that of the final-year student who pranked the victims have held a meeting with us and it was established that it was a prank.
“The families have reached some agreement and we want the process of the burial to take place before the student that pranked them will face disciplinary measures.
“It was an unfortunate incident; the school regrets it, the student who pranked them regrets it and the family of the concerned student will take responsibility for the funeral of the dead victim and the hospital bill of the other student. We use this opportunity to warn students to avoid expensive pranks that lead to death, the person will face the music.” he concluded.
