Josh2Funny, a well-known comedian, disclosed the true reason he stopped playing Mama Felicia, his female character.
Josh revealed in a recent interview on the Honest Bunch podcast that he had uncomfortable experiences as a result of unwelcome fan advances.
He made it clear that, in contrast to other comedians who portray female characters, his goal was strictly comic.
He claimed to have received offensive texts, one of which was from a man who admitted to having feelings for him.
In a light-hearted reply, Josh said he would pray for the man to go blind in two weeks.
He stated that following such events, he decided to eliminate the Mama Felicia character and instead introduce Brother Zacchaeus, who wears male clothes and speaks with the same accent to avoid additional embarrassment and focus on making people laugh.
What they’re saying
He commented in Pidgin:
“You see, the difference between me and some other people who play female characters is that mine was straight comedy. Anyone who sees me like me doesn’t understand and doesn’t know where they’re going since I made it look foolish.
“Mama Felicia is a stupid character; it was outright ridiculous.
“I received a lot of advances. E get one man wey come to my WhatsApp and said, “I really like you,” so I went right to him and told him, “Bro, I’m going to pray, and you’ll be blind in two weeks,” and he began to beg me.
“E join why i leave the character. It was Mama Felicia but I became Brother Zacchaeus.
“ Instead of wearing a female dress, I had to change into male clothing and maintain the same accent. It was becoming humiliating for me because I only wanted to make people laugh.”
Bottom Line
Josh2Funny gained popularity with his viral skit #DontLeaveMe and recently appeared on America’s Got Talent, showing his “fastest reader in the world” character.
Josh2Funny intended the “Mama Felicia” character to be purely comedic, but some audience members misinterpreted it, leading to uncomfortable advances. This highlights the gap that can sometimes exist between a creator’s intent and the audience’s interpretation.
