Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, fondly called RMD, has shared his thoughts on being labelled a “legend,” admitting he’s not comfortable with the tag.
During an interview on the show Curiosity Made Me Ask, the 63-year-old Nollywood star said he believes the term is often used to suggest that someone is past their peak or heading towards retirement.
For RMD, true legends in the industry are veterans like Olu Jacobs and Pete Edochie, whom he holds in high esteem for their lasting impact and contribution to the Nigerian film space.
He explained that being called a legend can feel like being placed in a corner where people no longer see you as active or relevant in your craft.
“I think all those legend thing is a scam. I have my legends like uncle Olu Jacobs, uncle Pete, those are our ancestors, our legends,” he said.
“I was still watching him when he was saying Ribena children are healthy children.
“So I don’t subscribe to that, I think it is a scam when they call me legend because they are trying to relegate me to that neighbourhood of retired people or should be nearing retirement. So, no, I don’t subscribe to it.”
RMD’s comments highlight how labels, even when meant as compliments, can sometimes carry unintended implications.
