The Russian city of Saratov was hit by Ukrainian drones overnight, according to regional governor Roman Busargin. Debris from the drones, which were destroyed mid-air, fell in an industrial area, causing no reported injuries. Saratov, located about 730 km southeast of Moscow, is home to an oil refinery and a nearby airbase housing strategic bombers that Ukraine has previously targeted.
Simultaneously, Russia launched a large-scale drone and missile assault on Ukraine, killing one civilian and injuring more than 30 across 12 regions, Ukrainian officials said. Ukraine’s air force intercepted 62 of the 92 drones and downed four out of five missiles. The attacks caused significant damage, particularly in the Odesa and Kyiv regions, hitting homes, civilian infrastructure, and vehicles.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on allies to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses, urging immediate action to counter the near-nightly drone attacks, which he argues aim to stretch Ukrainian defenses and lower civilian morale.
Bottom Line:
As both sides intensify aerial assaults, Ukraine is under growing pressure to bolster air defenses and receive support from international allies. The escalation underscores the ongoing risks to civilians and the strategic struggle in the region as the war approaches its 1,000-day mark.
