Yul Edochie Faces Backlash for Advising Nigerians Against Protesting

Nigerian actor Yul Edochie has come under heavy criticism from social media users for his recent advice to Nigerians to refrain from protesting against the country’s economic hardships. On July 19, 2024, Edochie took to Instagram to urge patience and continued dialogue instead of taking to the streets.

“I acknowledge the hardships. Protest is not the answer,” he wrote. “People take advantage of protests to break into other people’s shops, steal, destroy properties, hurt and kill innocent Nigerians who are already going through a lot. In the end, the aim of the protest will be defeated. Remember what happened during End Sars.”

He continued, “Let’s keep speaking out and doing all we can to help out. President Tinubu listens and he’s doing all he can to put make things right. Fellow Nigerians, let’s be patient.”

Despite his well-meaning intentions, Edochie’s post sparked intense backlash from his followers. One disgruntled follower commented, “Who are you to advise Nigerians?? We all know this post is motivated and powered by stomach infrastructure. Go and pay your children’s school fees first before you come here and give advice nobody is asking for.”

Another person remarked sarcastically, “You’re funny, sir. Have you considered comedy?”

One user expressed disappointment, “How on earth did this boy we loved back then take a turn into this big fool?”

In a harsher response, another follower stated, “With all due respect, Mr. Yul Edochie, may God punish you for saying this.”

Edochie’s attempt to calm the public seems to have backfired, highlighting the deep frustration and anger many Nigerians feel over the ongoing economic challenges.
