China Praises Nigeria’s Leadership Role in Africa as Wang Yi Visits Abuja

During the visit of the Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Yi to Abuja. The Chinese Foreign Minister hailed Nigeria’s pivotal role in amplifying Africa’s voice on the global stage. Yi described Nigeria’s contributions as “irreplaceable,” emphasizing on the country’s influence in fostering peace and development across the continent.

Yi’s visit to Abuja is his first trip to an African country since the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing.

Strengthening Ties: A Historic Visit

Wang YI’s visit shows the importance China places on its relationship with Nigeria especially in the area of cooperation with African Countries.
Wang Yi explained that his meeting with Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Maitama Yusuf Tuggar, was focused on implementing agreements reached during the 2024 FOCAC session.

“My visit this time is to further the tradition of the Chinese foreign minister visiting Africa as the first overseas visit of the new year,” Yi stated.

He emphasized the need to act on the 10 partnership actions outlined during the summit, describing Nigeria as a cornerstone of China’s comprehensive strategic partnership with Africa. “I’m sure that our meeting today will produce new common understandings and foster growth in our relations,” Yi added.

Recognizing Nigeria’s Global Influence

The Chinese Foreign Minister hailed Nigeria as a major force in Africa and a vital member of the global South, highlighting the shared vision between both nations to advance their strategic interests and mutual development.

“Nigeria plays an irreplaceable and important role in Africa’s peace and development. China has always viewed relations with Nigeria from a strategic and long-term perspective,” Yi said.

He pledged continued support for Nigeria’s development goals and reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening solidarity and cooperation between the two nations.

Celebrating FOCAC Success and Future Plans

Yi commended Nigeria’s significant contributions to the success of the 2024 FOCAC summit, which aimed to deepen diplomacy and mutual development between China and African nations.

“President Tinubu’s visit to China for the FOCAC Beijing Summit was a full success. It marked the elevation of our relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, ushering in new and brighter prospects for our cooperation,” he said.

The first plenary meeting of the Nigeria-China Intergovernmental Committee, held in Beijing, was also highlighted as a major milestone. Yi praised both nations for laying the groundwork for mutually beneficial collaborations in various sectors.

A Bright Future for Nigeria-China Relations

As Wang Yi concluded his visit, he reiterated China’s commitment to delivering on promises made at the FOCAC summit. He expressed optimism about the future of Nigeria-China relations, which continue to yield “real benefits” for their citizens.

The 2024 FOCAC session, held in September, focused on strengthening diplomatic ties and fostering mutual commitment to peace and development between China and African nations.
